The Darth Sith of Parenting
This is for my son.......
Tonight is perhaps one of the hardest nights I've had in awhile. Five combat deployments, traveling the world and seeing the poorest of mankind, seeing evil in in its purest form during war, nothing prepares you for that moment when your teenage son goes through the rebellious stage.
Yes, I live in a world of rules. I expect manners and courtesy and giving a 110%. But more importantly I expect my 14 year old son to respect his mom and always say "I love you" and acknowledge her kindness.
So as my child tells me of his pains of living without his computer and cellphone (he lost it due to violating social media rules), his hate for having a nice house over his head, his hate of the food we cook, his hate for having to move because of the military, his hate for being in the cold of Seattle instead of being in Hawaii, his desire to just be mediocre, I said it is OK.
I said he could hate me all he wants. I can be the villain in his life. I just have one request... every morning when we get up to go to school and I'm helping your mom, my wife get ready for school, making coffee, and helping her get everyone out of the house and to her job as a teacher, do one thing--- Always tell your mom you love her when she says it to you as she heads out to be a teacher. She deserves that respect as your mom and my wife, all we care about is making you a better person.
I can live being the Sith Dark Lord of parenting. I can be hated and disrespected for making you uphold values, but never disrespect your mom. Always love her and let her know.
