Closure for Cold War 1.0’s Last Battle

Closure for  Cold War 1.0’s Last Battle Democracy’s Next Evolution in Northeast Asi a                [Screen capture from KCNA video]           The time is right for a new era of global engagement. Advancing the  story of democracy  and opportunities for a free society should not rest entirely on the shoulders’ of the Soldier or the Diplomat. Rather, all citizens blessed with the opportunity to prosper under the protections of democracy should vigorously engage the oppressive regimes of the world. Though I’m focused on the serpents in my backyard, the evils of oppressive regimes exist all over the world. I’m reminded by an article today of how precious the time is we have to make a difference. The families of the generation that fought in the Korean War are  dying off . Soon there will be no voices remaining that know their cousins and bloodline across the DMZ. It’s time to once ...

Reflections on Engaging in Social Media

This week has been a challenge.  Reflecting on leadership and embracing technology in new aspects has changed a few of my thoughts.  Perhaps the enlightenment has been viewing the world and interacting on the web and not hiding behind blackboard portals or academic peer journals. This blog has provided persistent engagement and the ability to see and monitor how many views my blog receives. This is different for communicating in the open instead of closed Facebook or internet accounts.  These past two months have also made me consider and review the Jesuit values on how to make a difference in the world, the care of the whole person, and commitment of service. The infusion of technology into leadership started me thinking on how to advocate on a mass level for an idea and to start socializing concepts for service and humanitarian efforts.  My brain is constantly filled with ideas on how do we engage in a globally connected world. Are we...

Finding Solutions to Future Warfare

Often we look at the future with the lens of the past. Often wondering how we design the better weapon for future battles. However, we often miss changes in warfare as we look to redesign the weapons, force structure, and tactics to battle against tomorrow’s adversaries.      As we look to the future, perhaps it is best to define complicated from complex problems.  Complicated problems are those that are difficult but can be broken down into small steps that can be solved by a technical solution or process adaptation.  Complex or sometimes called wicked problems are those that are adaptive and ever-changing in nature, sort of a system of systems construct, that prevent linear solutions.  Cracking complexity offers additional insights on how to solve problems: https://www.crackingcomplexity.com/the-difference-between-complex-and-complicated-problems-and-how-to-solve-them/ .      Kevin Kelly offers a few ideas a...

Intellectual Property and Its Leadership Challenges

Defining Intellectual Property      Intellectual property has many facets. Stanford legal department ( https://fairuse.stanford.edu/overview/introduction/intellectual-property-laws/ )  offers a few insights into what is covered in the intellectual property domain. Copyright, Patent laws, and trademark registration often fall into the category of intellectual property. The Federal Bureau of Investigation ( https://www.fbi.gov/investigate/white-collar-crime/piracy-ip-theft )  also elaborates on intellectual property definition by also including proprietary products, processes, entertainment media, and software. Though there can be many definitions of what encompasses intellectual property, of note is how it is protected. The online legal site HG.org, established by Lex Mundi, provides guidance on how intellectual property is protected by the constitution and how Congress can regulate trade and establish agencies to prote...
